TSAVO WEST NATIONAL PARK

“Land of Lava, Springs, & Man-Eaters”: slogan of Tsavo West National Park Tsavo West is a stunning, wild place, with everything from the Shetani lava flows to the sight of fifty million gallons of crystal clear water spilling out of the Mzima Springs beneath the dry lava rock. The broad grasslands, scrublands, and Acacia forests that make up the savannah environment are also found there, along with belts of riverine vegetation and rocky ridges like Poacher’s Lookout, from where tourists may observe the teeming herds in the plains below. Attractions in Tsavo West include elephants, rhinoceroses, hippos, lions, cheetahs, leopards, buffalos, and a variety of plant and bird species, including the vulnerable corncrake and the nearly threatened Basra Reed Warbler.

HOW BIG IS TSAVO EAST NATIONAL PARK

The Tsavo West National Park is situated about 200 kilometers (km) south-east of Nairobi, near Kenya’s southern border with Tanzania. One of the largest game sanctuaries in the world is formed when this park and Tsavo East are combined. The Mombasa/Nairobi road divides the East and West parks, both of which function well when connected to Mombasa. A variety of landforms can be seen in Tsavo West, including granite summits, extinct volcanic cones, undulating grasslands, and sharp reddish outcrops. Swamps and natural springs are also there. Due to the thick scrubs, wildlife can be challenging to see. A month after it was established, in May 1948, Tsavo National Park was split into East and West for administrative considerations. Tsavo National Park is Kenya’s largest park with a total area of 21 812 square kilometers.

Keep an eye out for movement and signs of African animals as you make a tsavo west trip through the red-earth roads. As you point out the wildlife and come to a stop, the more you look, the more you’ll see. This improves the trip’s camaraderie and excitement. Don’t forget to take in the sights with your eyes, not just your camera or video recorder! It is incredible to observe Kenyan wildlife coexisting with one another.

WHAT TO SEE IN TSAVO WEST NATIONAL PARK

Wildlife and fowl are plentiful in Tsavo West National Park. There are known to be more than 600 different bird species. Numerous animals, such as the leopard, cheetah, buffalo, rhino, elephant, giraffe, zebra, duiker, waterbuck, lion, crocodile, mongoose, warthog, hyrax, dik dik, and porcupine, can be seen.

The Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, which is located at the foot of Ngulia Hills, is another point of interest. Part of the Rhino Ark Program, the sanctuary guards the priceless black rhino herd in Tsavo West.

Volcanic eruptions left behind the Shetani flow, a black lava flow that is 8 km long, 1.6 km broad, and 5 m deep. In the vicinity of the outflow’s center is a little cave with an unreachable outlet that is only a few meters long.
